Bridge of Memories Mosaics
The history of Ellerslie began in 1848 when the young Scottish entrepreneur Robert Graham purchased two blocks of land bounded by Great South Road and Panmure Road. From these early beginnings, Ellerslie gradually developed into a place shaped by the community.
The mosaics along the walkway reflect layers of this local history and identity. Imagery drawn from the early Ellerslie Zoological Gardens recalls a lesser-known chapter of the suburb’s past, while references to historical architecture acknowledge the changing built environment and the generations who have lived and worked there. The inclusion of the racecourse recognises one of Ellerslie’s most enduring landmarks and its significance within Auckland’s cultural history.
At the centre of the project is the Tree of Life, created by students from the local primary school who use the walkway each day. Their contribution brings the work into the present, connecting contemporary community life with the histories embedded in the area. The mosaics become not only a reflection of Ellerslie’s past, but also a shared expression of belonging, memory, and continuity between generations.
